Bad Mug Candles

Bad Mug Candles

This series is called Bad Mug Candles. They began as my early attempts at learning ceramics, specifically wheel-throwing mugs. Turns out, making a mug that’s actually nice to drink from is harder than it looks. The glaze is messy, the forms aren’t symmetrical, they are a little too heavy, and while I loved the idea of oversized handles, when it came time to use them… well, let’s just say it’s not exactly functional if the handles hit you in the face.

Instead of seeing them as failures, I decided to reframe them. They became candles. Each on is a little works of art with a new purpose. The fragrance is White Tea, a blend of citrus, lemongrass, white tea, and sweet jasmine. Uplifting and ethereal, it feels fitting for a project that’s really about process, transformation, and not taking yourself too seriously.

For me, these mugs-turned-candles are reminders that mistakes can be beautiful, that learning is messy, and that the joy of creating isn’t in perfection, but in possibility.

Medium: Ceramic with scented soy wax.
Size: Coffee Mug size, but a little too heavy.
